Today's Rejected Ledge Starring: My Nuts Are on Fire!

"Today's Rejected Ledge" is a daily column written by me and submitted to the Daily Iowan, who in turn rejects it. Sometimes it is written specifically to be rejected, sometimes it is not. When each of these is the case, is for you dear reader, to figure out.
Danny Devito has a Twitter Account and the man does not disappoint. Check out my top ten favorite tweet's of the Troll's since he created his account.

3D Garbage Portraits

Just thought I'd make tonight a dump.

Via Digg: Check out these sweet renditions of classic portraits constructed using random objects.

Today's Rejected Ledge

Another soon to be abandoned blog by Nate? Yes.

My new idea? I've started writing Ledges. Aka the back cover of the Daily Iowan sports section, which have generally been written by Andrew Juhl since my freshman year. I have grown more and more to like his stuff, but sometimes it falls a little flat (which everything that has to be written once a day will do). This Star Wars one was pretty sweet, but then again it's hard for me to not like any reference made to Star Wars.

Anyways, most of these I write, I expect to be rejected by the DI, hence the title of these posts. Sometimes I mean for the rejection, like in this first one, sometimes I don't. You figure it out. Anyways, I'll say this will be a regular thing, until it isn't.

Things Deemed Newsworthy that Aren’t

1. Celebrity Eating Habits: barring any diagnosed medical condition, if you don’t want to be fat, eat healthy and exercise. Don’t base your happiness on disgustingly determined societal images of “Celebrities.”

2. Strike that last one. It should read Anything to do with “Celebrities.” Britney Spears should be exiled. Perez Hilton uses Paint to draw cum stains on pictures. I guess knowing about Brody and the Kardashian’s fued makes you credible.

3. Political Sex Scandals. Human Beings, especially those that run “news organizations” have no right to be morally presumptuous of other human being’s lives.

4. Anything to do with “Celebrities.”

5. Intramural Sports

6. The coverage of animal rights over human rights. Michael Vick rightfully spent 18 months in prison for murdering dogs. Dante Stallworth spent 30 days in prison for the death of another human being. Are we all degenerate?

7. Reviews: Movies, music or literary. Consume media because it moves or inspires you. Formulate your own opinions about things (especially about this statement).

8. Jon and Kate. Maybe the 8. Seriously, Jon and Kate disgust me.

9. Did I mention celebrities?

Note: Nathan Ley wants to inform readers that he wishes he was as jacked as Brad Pitt in Fight Club, was quoted in a Daily Iowan intramural sports story this semester, used to write movie, music and literary reviews for the Daily Iowan, and is usually morally presumptuous of other human being’s lives. He doesn’t really have a problem with dog killing though – well at least not while human killing continues.

A Quasi Semi-Sort of Response to Frank Durham

Journalism Professor Frank Durham wrote an interesting op-ed piece in the DI today. You can view it here. And while I don't disagree with him in any way, I did feel that a response was necessary, so I wrote one. Hopefully you will see it in the DI on Thursday. Here it is early though...

A Quasi, semi-sort of, not really response to Professor Frank Durham.

I don’t believe anyone would say binge drinking is a “good” thing. I also don’t believe that anyone would try and argue against the statements Professor Durham made in the Guest Opinions section of the Daily Iowan on Tuesday May 12. However, something should be said in response and luckily being direct does have its place. Here goes.

In two days I will have finished my junior year here at the University of Iowa. I will be one class shy of completing an undergraduate degree in Journalism and four courses shy of completing another in Informatics. The majority of my time here has been spent furthering my education, though I have certainly willingly participated in binge drinking on a number of occasions.

Professor Durham, you are 100% correct in saying the problems of the world are ours to inherit and attempt to solve – we accept this challenge willingly. As a soon-to-be senior though, it has been my experience and that of my peers that this university and its faculty are not always conducive to providing us with the necessary tools.

Much too often do I see dedicated, ambitious students fall victim to professors and classes dedicated not to the actual learning and understanding of real-world concepts, but rather busy work and irrelevant assignments that promote grade-grubbing more than knowledge. Too often are students enrolled in classes where the majority of their grade is based on attendance and homework assignments that should be used for understanding and not evaluation, rather than conceptual papers and tests. Too often are students enrolled in classes where overly qualified and intelligent foreign professors cannot speak our English language or understand the basic structure of our national society.

Please do not misconstrue my words. I have no doubt about the intelligence of the foreign professors utilized on this campus, but is there no screening process? Some people are simply not meant to teach – I assume this is why Iowa offers an education degree program, to develop practical and useful teaching methodologies. No student should be subject to the teaching policies of someone they cannot even verbally understand.

I would never argue that a student who skipped all of his classes would thoroughly and explicitly understand intricacies of a specific class, but the merit of his or her grade should not pertain to his or her presence in a lecture hall. Most likely if a student is skipping enough class, his or her grades will be so reflected, but if a tuition student chooses to skip class and subsequently fail out, so be it.

And while these problems seem common place among the student body, they appear to be either unknown or utterly ignored by the administration. Along with classmates, I have submitted three end-of-semester evaluations honestly critiquing professors and their classes (two in the journalism department) in such a manner as to hopefully warrant a serious review of their teaching practices and course syllabi. All three of those professors continue to teach and with relatively unaltered syllabi.

Certainly I am not naive enough to believe any single set of those end-of-semester evaluations are taken in the least bit seriously, but even that in-and-of itself is genuinely discouraging as a student. In a conference with the interim director of the journalism school this semester, he admitted the amount of course work expected for a specific journalism was absurd. It will be interesting to see the dynamics of that class next semester.

I have had truly incredible professors at this university; professors who have challenged my views on education, work ethic and life in general; professors who have dedicated their time to the further advancement of the men and women in their classes and myself; professors who have acted much more than simply published scholars and academic employees; professors who have helped all their students continue to believe in the intrinsically good nature of human beings.

Make no mistake, the students at this university wish to learn and better themselves not only to the point of personal success but also to the points of influencing the lives of others in positive ways. We strive time and time again for excellence because we realize the enormous pressures and problems that stand ever growing and ever waiting for us once we enter the “real world.” We want desperately to do what you say Professor Durham – save the world. We know there are professors out there, men and women alike who want to help us. Sometimes though, we just need something, however small or large it may be, to restore our faith.

JR Smith: A Mystery, Wrapped in an Enigma, Covered in Tats

Just came across this awesome blurp written about JR Smith, from Austen Kent, the editor of The Good Point. The blurp was featured on Ball Don't Lie, and is certainly worth reading. Check it out here. Oh and p.s. the title in the article is in reference to the description Winston Churchill once gave Russia: "They are a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma."

Divenire : Become

If you have been watching the NBA in the last two years like I have, then you have certainly noticed the extremely well put together marketing campaign: "Where Amazing Happens."

Last year the TV spots featured a piano song by Carly Commando entitled "Everyday." This year, the NBA has taken the same approach with their 2009 playoff spots. The song is of course different, but the effect is the same. This year, the song is "Fly" from Ludovico Einardi's Divenire (Which translated means to become). I will try and upload mp3s later, but for now here are some youtube versions of the songs.

In a word, I guess I would call them amazing...

Carly Commando: Everyday

Ludovico Einardi: Fly

The Disappointment that is Asher Roth

I hate reviews. Movie reviews, music reviews, concert reviews, all of them. Maybe it's because I had to write so many while with the DI. Maybe it's because I used to have a website whose content was solely music reviews, or maybe it's because they are totally irrelevant. People can make their own decisions. They don't need anyone else to tell them what to think or even enjoy for that matter.

HOWEVER

I had to write something today for the mere fact that I am so utterly disappointed. Asher Roth sucks. Or at least his first major debut does.

Seriously, is there a template or formula for shitty rap? I want to know. Does every mainstream rapper subscribe to a shitty rap newsletter? Cause all of you motherfuckers rap about fucking bitches, getting money (or not if you think it's a new idea to talk about not caring about money like Asher Roth - keep in mind anyone that says this has money and is thus lying anyways), haters, drinking, smoking weed, or the new one which baffles me, dancing. Are you fucking kidding me?

Asher, you had so much potential. "I Love College," is catchy. Funny. Maybe not totally original, but at least it was a breath of fresh air for a few months. And you ruined that. You made a real CD. You got the chance. You were called up to the big leagues. And you chose to make the songs "She Don't Wanna Man," "Blunt Cruisin, and "As I Am?" What a fucking joke.

Don't take me the wrong way. There are great songs about all of the topics I mentioned above, but you only make those songs if you can make them in a new way. Asher Roth does not. He fails miserably in my opinion.

Not to mention that shitty shitty shitty production of this CD. Stale is perhaps the best word. In fact the whole CD is stale. The flows, the beats, everything. If you were expecting something new and catchy from Asher Roth, you will certainly be disappointed like myself.

I saved the best for last. There's a track titled, "As I Em," which is all about how Roth is sick of being compared to Eminem. (Oh man what an awesome pun in the title of the song!) He hates it he says. He hates being interviewed about it. He's not Eminem. Ok, we get it. THEN WHY THE FUCK DOES YOUR WEBSITE PROCLAIM YOU AS THE NEXT EMINEM???!!? I'll be fair, I'm sure Roth didn't personally make his own website. But if your going to make a claim about not being Eminem, you should probably make sure your own press people aren't doing it. Maybe he'll get lucky and it will be off his website before anyone realizes what a fucking joke he is.

Oh yea though, here is the greatest Irony. His two best tracks, "Bad Day," and "Sour Patch Kids"... yea, they sound exactly like a less angry Eminem. So don't worry Asher, I don't think anyone will ever compare you to Marshall Mathers again, more like Vanilla Ice. Way to take another giant leap backwards for mainstream hip/hop.

P.s. I almost forgot. On the track "La Di Da," Roth states that Jay-Z gave him his approval. If this is true I'll probably cry.

An Excellent Write Up on the Bulls Celtics Series

In case you haven't been paying attention, the Celtics, Bulls series has become the most gripping and intense matchup of these early goings. Last night Ben Gordon dropped 42 while Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen) dropped 30 (28 in the second half) including a catch-and-shoot trey over the out stretched fingers of 6'11 Joakim Noah with 2 seconds left to even the series at one game apeice last night.

I am of course a frequenter of Yahoo's NBA Blog: Ball Don't Lie, and there was a great write-up about last nights game, by the blog's manager J.E. Skeets. Check it out HERE

More Than A Game

Great NBA Day.
This just popped up on Ball Don't Lie.
At last years Sundance Film Festival, a documentary about LeBron James and his high school teammates premiered. Reports I read at that time called it one of the best basketball movies ever made. Primarily filmed and directed by a student from James's high school, the film was picked up by Lionsgate and slated for distribution sometime this year. The first trailer just found its way out. Check it here

Reports said James was so touched by the film, he left the premiere in tears...

Josh Smith Soars Over the Heat

In case you missed the Atlanta Hawks blatant rape of Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat yesterday, take a second to watch Josh Smith. Quite possibly the most athletic player in the NBA...

The Decline and Fall of American Journalism

At 11:32 pm I received this text from the CNN Breaking News Center: Ashton Kutcher is first to claim 1 Million followers in CNN Twitter contest.

I always wonder what Vonnegut and Mr. Clemens would say at times like these.

I assume it would be something along the lines of,
"So it Goes."

Indie-Pendent

Looking for some new "Heady" music to listen to? Then check this out:
Amazon's 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time.

Sure Indie Rock carries with it that pretentious artsy-fartsy connotation, but there is some pretty decent stuff on the list.

Recommendations: titles by: TV on the Radio, Portugal the Man, Spiritulaized and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

Dat New "New"

So yes, I created another blog. And, like previous times before I am proclaiming to update this on a regular basis, even though I am fully aware that very few, if any people read this.

My last attempt at this, was entitled "Sometimes Nothing is a Real Cool Hand," which was of course a reference to Cool Hand Luke and of course some of my feelings on life at the time.

I thought about calling this one "So it Goes," which would have of course been a reference to Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse 5 and perhaps would have been extremely fitting considering the two year anniversary of his death was yesterday.

In the end though, I chose "Do Androids Dream of electric Sheep," which was the novel Blade Runner is based on. Although I had seen parts before, it was not until recently that I sat down and gave the film the thorough watching it deserved. It quickly jumped into my list of favorite and respected movies and in a way this the film is a tribute to Vonnegut in light of its underlying question: what is human and what defines humanity?

Blogs are always criticized and I expect this to be no different. It should be stated though, that I am not particularly writing this for other people. I have always tried to not place too much relevance on what others thought of me, but inevitably there are always people close to us whose opinion we do genuinely care about. Unfortunately, those people can come and go. If nothing else, I write this as a record. A place to archive and hopefully delay forgetting about those things that quickly pass in our lives.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain."
-Roy Batty in Blade Runner

If you've read this far, thank you. Here's the payoff. New Kid Cudi. Perhaps the release I am most excited about this upcoming summer:
